The Obscure.
Thursday, April 20th, My Partner and I went to California's first legal distillery called The Obscure. It’s located in downtown Los Angeles right across from where my favorite show “It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia” shoots. This is an invite-only event that took a whole 15 minutes on their website to get invited to, so really anyone can go if you are willing to put that time in. When we arrived we were greeted with a tarot card that had a black jaguar on it labeled “The Emperor” and waited in a nice outdoor area with iced tea that was infused with some of the ingredients that were originally infused in the gin they provided. When we entered the building, it smelled like the Pirates of The Caribbean ride from Disney Land and had the same aesthetic. A dark room filled with yellow and orange lights that barely lit up the room. I knew we were in for a journey. We sat down at the table and 3 cups were waiting for us filled with Gin, Rum, and Whiskey.
Before we were allowed to try the first drink, they gave us a lot of history on the alcohol that we were tasting, such as where it originated and how it was used for medication early on. They did this for each of the tasters and after we finished one, they brought out a cocktail that was based around 1 of those 3 tasters. My favorite drink was the Whiskey because 1: I love whiskey, but 2: This was whiskey that was strictly made only in California and is extremely hard to get your hands on, so it was cool to experience what was probably a once-a-lifetime thing. What I loved most about this place was the storytelling that went into it and how dedicated the staff was to making sure everyone learned something along the way. I recommend this for anyone willing to go out and learn something that they may not have the most knowledge in, even if you don’t like alcohol very much, it has a very fascinating past, present, and future.
