Second Draft.

Recently my partner, Beth, and I have been going to an actor/writer organization called Second Draft. It is where actors and writers come together to make work come to life. It’s a small black box theater where writers bring in 10 pages of something that they are working on, and they cast the actors to present it to everyone in the room. I’ve been looking for someplace like this where I could just let my creativity let loose and “play” with other freaks and geeks in the world of art, and this is the perfect spot to do that. As soon as we walked in were welcomed by the owners and they were so pleasant and encouraged to join, it made the environment feel safe and comfortable. We met up with Beth's brother Andrew who invited us there, and he had submitted 10 pages of his screenplay that he's currently writing, so I was very much looking forward to reading and experiencing the work that he had been creating.

In the beginning, I felt anxious because I hadn't acted in front of anyone in LA, and it was much different than just performing in front of my class at school, but as soon as I got the script and had been cast for Andrew's work, I felt ready to go. Everyone in there, both actors and writers, were extremely talented and just nice human beings. I also ran into a client of the company I worked for and had a long and informative conversation about the industry which was so unexpected, but effective. After a while of watching performances, it was finally my turn to go up and work. We ended up doing the 10 pages and the room reacted well to it. Not only was the writing, but all of the actors up there with me were so great, and amazing scene partners. After the performances, there was a bar next door that we all went to, which was honestly my favorite par. It was so cool to talk to so many up-and-coming artists that work so hard and are trying to do the same thing I am, It was a very reassuring moment because It made me realize that I’m not alone in this world of people trying to build a career out of this. I got such great advice and made some great connections. Cannot wait to go back.
